1992-96 S4 and S6 performance
- Stock S4 versus the Stock 1991 200TQ
- Horsepower:
The 1991 200TQ has 217HP @ 5700RPM, The US S4 with 227HP@ 5900
RPM
Torque:
Max Torque is 228 lb-ft (309Nm) for the 1991 200TQ, and *258lb-ft
(350Nm) for the S4.
* (Without Overboost) The S4 Engine Management system allows an
"Overboost" condition where 2.15 bar max boost is allowed for up
to 15 seconds.
- The Jan. 1994 European Car Magazine indicates that the Euro S2 which
used the S4 engine, makes 230HP@5900 RPM, Max Torque of 258 lb-ft
(350Nm) from 1950-3000 RPM. Interestingly, it explains the "Overboost
Torque" available is 280 lb-ft (380Nm) from 2100-4000 RPM. The Audi
Factory Brochure for the 1994 S2 also shows this overboost torque
to be 380Nm @ 2100 RPM
- It would appear that the higher torque output over a broader RPM
range makes the STOCK S4 quicker in the 1/4 mile than the STOCK 1991
200TQ, even though the S4 is ~200 lbs heavier.
Keep in mind, that when you compare Stage I modified S4's versus
the Stage I modified1991 200TQ 20V, the 1991 200TQ 20V will usually
have better mid range acceleration in 3rd and 4th gear, due to the
different gearing and lower weight.

Weight/HP info
Vehicle Weight/Horsepower:
Assume a curb weight (no driver) of 3850 lbs for the US S4 with
227HP and 3650 lbs for the 1991 200TQ 20V
- The 1991 200TQ is at 16.82 lbs/HP
- The S4 is at 16.96 lbs/HP
- The 1986-90 5000TQ/200TQ at 3450lbs would only need 205HP to be
at the same lb/HP rating.
- The 1995 BMW M3 at 3150lbs with 240HP comes in at 13.1 lbs/HP.
- The S4 needs 293HP to meet the M3 weight/HP,
the 200TQ 20V needs 278HP,
the 5000/200TQ needs 263HP.
- Automobile Magazine Oct. 1987, Porsche 959, 450HP, curb weight 2977,
how does 6.6 lbs/HP sound....
Hmm....Looks like I need to go on a diet.....
Vehicle Weights, S4 and 5000TQ Component
weights
Horsepower is often used to compare vehicles performance, often times
unfortunately, the weight of the vehicle is overlooked or not mentioned.
The transmission gearing and tire size, will also have a large affect
on the acceleration capability of the vehicle. The other aspect of performance,
is the amount of torque the engine produces at different RPM points,
if you were to graph the torque output vs RPM, this area under the curve,
is usually more important to gauge acceleration potential, than one
HP number at a single RPM.
